Since 2006, TakeAction Minnesota has partnered with leaders of the Native American community to increase Native American voter engagement. First working with the Red Lake Political Education Committee, our work together has grown steadily. We’ve forged an ongoing partnership with Native Vote Alliance of Minnesota. In 2010 we worked together in seven communities around the state knocking on over 7500 doors and making over 9000 phone calls.
We use an innovative model of direct door-to-door outreach, recruiting band members to lead and run canvasses in their own communities. In 2010 we hired and trained 43 canvassers around the state.
Between elections, we partner with tribal community leaders on issue of importance to the community: including supporting full funding of the Indian Health Service provisions of the Affordable Care Act, opposing the expansion of gaming through a state-run metro casino, and co-hosting the state’s first cross-tribal gubernatorial candidate forum.
