What We Are Doing About It
Major employers in the state have the opportunity to help our neighborhoods be strong and safe. We expect them to take it. Every study shows that a decent job is the best way to reconnect a person to the community and prevent future crime. And if we’re going to close the racial gap in unemployment in our state, we need corporations to look beyond a person’s criminal record.

We are asking some of Minnesota’s largest employers to lead the way by modeling a set of Fair Hiring Practices for dealing with criminal backgrounds. These practices expand the pool of qualified applicants available to employers and protect companies from potential liability concerns, while also helping build a positive and safe community for everyone in Minnesota.

We are beginning the Fair Hiring Campaign by scheduling meetings with employers to understand their current hiring practices and to discuss these model practices that will benefit both the companies and the community. We have sent letters asking for meetings with eleven companies.

We will follow up with these companies until we get a meeting.

We need your stories and involvement to build the momentum so that these companies recognize us and work with us to solve the problem of employment barriers for people with past records.
